It is a great psycho-thriller and Mikkelson and Dancy and Fishburne have great chemistry. It is not for CHILDREN, nor the faint of heart. Of course the weekly unsubs also make this a chillingly delightful show. The rest of the cast including Caroline Dhavernas and Hattiane Park and the very creepy Lara Jean Choresteki as the journalist/accomplice Freddie Lounds round out a fun cast. Mikkelson does a superb job establishing the eccentric, soulless, monster hiding in plain sight as a respected psychiatrist. However it is Mads Mikkelson who ultimately has to carry the show and to do this he has to show that he is every bit as chilling as the Hannibal portrayed by Hopkins. Hugh Dancy does an exceptional job giving depth to Will Graham. That said Lawrence Fishburne provides perhaps the most detailed and dynamic Crawford to date. There have been multiple Jack Crawfords (Scott Glenn and Harvey Kietel) as well as Will Grahams (Will Petersen, Ed Norton). If anyone would have told me that there could be a "Hannibal Lecter" without Anthony Hopkins I would have laughed at them. I will add that the scenes of carnage on display are presented as an art form, and sometimes got a little obvious/boring in a "let's see if we can outdo the last splatterpiece" way, but that is merely my own take on things and I never claimed to be a man with all the answers or any taste in art or cannibalism for that manner, so form your own opinion because you know what? You can always close your eyes to the extremities for whatever reason, AND YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS this wonderfully written and produced/directed/acted show because it is a delight and I don't use that word too often. Of course you know the old adage about "there's no such thing as bad publicity", so It made me even more curious, and i thought I'd take a peak inside this debut Season. Yes, I read the reviews, including the ones that complain about the gore on display. Did I regret it? Nah, I ended up eventually buying all 3 Seasons, and though they are all keepers with moments of brilliance, THIS Season is the cherry on top of, uh, whatever that most famous mischievous cannibal has whipped up to serve you in his not-so-humble abode. Hannibal: Season 1? Who put THIS in my shopping cart? Oh, Okay, I did. Not to mention the talented Lawrence Fishburne and Gillian Anderson. Hugh Dancy is equally interesting as the conflicted agent Will Graham. He is subtle and sensuous and slyly menacing. How rare to have a cast of talented actors that were not selected on the basis of their pretty faces. The cast is wonderful and totally believable. Hannibal is a connoisseur savoring the gourmet menus that result from his murderous forays. Cannibal cuisine never looked so delicious. Then there is the visual presentation of Dr Lecter's meals and the dinner parties. You could watch the show just for the decor. Hannibal's apartment is elegant, his clothing wardrobe is the expression of sophistication and sartorial splendor. We know he intends Will some harm, but just how lethal will this harm be? The audience knows so much more than Will and the other FBI agents. Hannibal slowly but surely inserts himself into Will's life and career. Psychiatrist Dr Hannibal Lecter is asked to evaluate burned out FBI agent Will Graham. It is intelligent, well written and interesting. Though I would warn anyone who tends to be a bit squeamish when it comes to blood and gore that this show definitely pushes the boundaries of what can be shown on TV. I cannot recommend this show highly enough. Hugh Dancy (who I generally don't care about) was surprisingly good, Lawrence Fishburne managed to remind me that he truly is an amazing actor and Mads Mikkelsen absolutely blew me away. It easily bounces from police procedural to slasher to psychological horror to action and even to cooking program with ease, never missing a beat and never letting the audience down. This is one of the first shows I have ever seen to truly genre hop in a fluid and non-jarring manner. And the show does present scenes of Hannibal preparing his meat in such a beautiful, almost loving way, that one can't help but get hungry.Īnyway. Is it weird that this show got me very interested in preparing and grilling different types of meats? I mean, we know what the meat in the show is 'supposed' to be, but we also know that (as tv producers are not psychopaths) the cuts of meat are regular beef/pork/lamb/etc presented as human flesh.
